Rose (Rosa)
Roses have been grown in the mountains for probably thousands of years, so the petals can be distilled to produce rose scent. They have miniature flowers on bushes up to 2 m high (see photo below, at Shuraijah in the Jebel Akhdar).
Similarly, you should only grow miniature roses as they are usually hardy enough to survive the summer. Although they flower all year, the summer flowers are extremely miniature (maybe 2 cm across!), but they will enlarge as the cold weather returns. The plants remain small and if they sprout too much, I would cut them back when the hot weather arrives, so they lose less water. During the summer, they need to be kept in the shade, but they prefer winter sun.
Unfortunately, miniature roses are still covered in thorns. You need to watch out for spider mites - if the stems are unhealthy, then examine them closely for silk threads covering them.
