Mandevilla splendens
A spectacularly beautiful climber with big conical flowers set against glossy leaves. The yellow variety (above) is very hardy and produces very big plants with long twining stems that form a dense mat of vegetation. It needs full sun, but will then flower profusely throughout the winter. In the shade, it will form very long thin stems without flowering.
White, red and especially the gorgeous bright pink varieties are unfortunately less hardy and I have not managed to get them to survive the summer. I have at present a pink, which I intend to keep cut back as a little bush in a small pot, which I will bring indoors during the summer and hopefully it will both flower and survive.
