Clerodendron speciosissimum
Clerodendron flowers and leaves, with Pandorea ricasoliana in the center
Clerodendron have sprays of small flowers in which the petals are surrounded by coloured sepals. In C. speciosissimum, both are normally red, although I have a variety with dark pink petals. The similar C. thomsoniae has dramatic white petals and red sepals, but C. thomsoniae is not very hardy and so is difficult to keep during the summer, but may be more successful in humid areas.
Clerodendron is a slow-growing woody climber (so needs to be trained on to a wire frame) with large thick leaves. It flowers in winter. It is fairly hardy, but may lose much of its leaves in summer. Mine does not grow more than 2 m, because longer shoots die back in the summer.
