Begonia semperflorens
Since this has small seeds, there is a fairly high mortality at germination, but once the seedlings are growing, they are relatively easy. They need shade and are fairly slow growing, but will continue flowering for many months. However, they cannot withstand the heat and so will end up as an annual. In addition, like the rather similar Impatiens (Busy Lizzie), they continually grow outwards and so old plants would be very straggly.
They are small plants producing masses of small bright flowers in red/ pink/ white against dark leaves.
Other large flowered begonias might survive here, but I have not been successful in the few times I have tried them.
Rex begonias, which are grown for their large brightly coloured leaves, are successful in the shade during the winter, but soon die when the hot weather arrives.
