Dahlia
Dahlias look rather like Chrysanthemums, but have characteristic leaves. Like Chrysanthemums, they come in a wide variety of different types of flowers and a wide variety of colours. Although there are short varieties, most are quite tall (20 cm or more) and need to be supported by a stake. If you are growing in a pot, the pot needs to be large (wide).
They are easy to grow from seeds during the cooler months, but after flowering for a month or so, they will die down (even if it is still cool). If you dig them up, you will find a group of large tubers (like potatoes). Shake off the soil and store them in the fridge. It is best to wrap them in kitchen paper to make sure they stay dry, otherwise they will rot. You can keep them in the fridge for 6 months until the weather is cooling down, before planting them. Do not plant them in hot weather. Plant them fairly deep (10 cm) in a good soil. They will grow and flower very rapidly (unlike the seed).
