Portulaca grandiflora (Moss rose)
A ground cover suitable for troughs or around the base of taller plants. However, it must have full sun or it will become very sickly. Although it is a succulent with fleshy leaves, it needs watering daily. It tends to stop flowering in the winter and is reduced in the summer, but flowers continuously through the spring and autumn. Each flower lasts 1 day, but large numbers are continuously produced.
Although it comes in a wide range of colours, purple or pink is the most common, because they seems to be the most heat tolerant. Others (like those in the photo above) are usually grown as annuals, while those below are perennial.
The plants are sometimes attacked by mealybugs.
