Hippeastrum
Hippeastrum have very large Amaryllid-type flowers in red/ pink/ white which only last a few days. Although they grow well in tropical deserts, unfortunately they will only flower if they are dried out for at least 2 months (and do not try this in the summer, unless you are going to keep them indoors). They develop a huge bulb and so need a large pot.
Hippeastrum rosea
This is an exception to the rest of Hippeastrums. It does not need a rest period (so has leaves all year) and unusually, it flowers in the hot season (May). Flowers are light red with darker stripes and are long-lasting, so the plant remains in flower for weeks. It is very easy to keep.
