Bougainvillea glabra
This is the classic tropical bush, which will be seen everywhere. It is extremely hardy, although it really needs sun to be healthy. It flowers continuously, even when it is vigorously cut back in to a small size. Without trimming, it will become huge and extremely straggly, like a woody climber - although it is often used for draping over and covering up tall walls.
Apart needing frequent trimming to keep it neat, its other disadvantage is that it is covered in long spines, so trimming is painful. To be healthy, it is very thirsty.
It has a range of colours: violet, purple, pink and orange and may have more than one colour of flowers on the same bush; there are also variegated leaves. There are doubles (as in photo above), but they are less hardy than singles
