Achimenes
You buy these as small annulated stick corms and theoretically each annulus could produce a new plant, but unless desperate, I would not divide it, since the plant will be weakened.
Plant the corm in October, preferably in a rich soil (e.g. potting compost). Do not over-water, or it will rot. It will soon sprout to produce a thick-leaved hairy plant, which forms a low ground cover. In a pot, it will soon be hanging over the sides. It produces brightly coloured flowers that come in a range of colours.
It flowers until the hot season starts, after which it will soon start to die. Stop watering and allow it to dry out. When you dig it up, you should find large numbers of corms (maybe 5x the original). Store the corms in a cool room (but keep dry, so they do not rot) until the next October.
A very reliable and easy to grow plant.
