Lagerstroemia indica (Crepe myrtle)
In ideal conditions (more humid and cooler than our region), this grows into one of the world's most spectacular small trees. Here, it is still very spectacular, but a small bush. It flowers throughout the summer (July to November). It does not like the cold and in winter may become deciduous. Each flower consists of a circle of frilly petals and the flowers form an inflorescence. The typical colour is bright pink, but purple and white can also be obtained.
After flowering, it is best to trim it back to stop it becoming too straggly, but the new growth will start as soon as flowering stops, so you need to be quick.
