Hibiscus rosa-sinensis
This is the common tropical hibiscus. Originally, it was red and had relatively small 1-day flowers on a medium size tree, but modern cultivars have huge flowers (15 cm in diameter) in a range of bright colours that may last 2-3 days (especially in a double flower) and will flower even in a small plant.
Most are quite hardy (survive in the summer sun, although probably stop flowering) and are happy in both sun and shade. They are very susceptible to mealybug attack, which if untreated will kill the stem or even the whole plant.
