Pansy (Viola tricolor)
These are strictly winter flowers, so the seedlings are not grown before November. They are relatively difficult to grow and you must expect a proportion to suddenly die without reason. This is because they end up as small plants (unlike the extensive plants you expect in Temperate regions), with a very poor root system (and so with little resistance to dehydration). Because of this, they are not very successful planted out, but are better in a pot. Even then, due to their small size, you can fit at least 3-5 in a fairly small pot!
Despite this, they have spectacularly large flowers in a variety of colours (e.g. blue, red, yellow, white), and traditionally, they have a black center. They are thus well worth trying.
They are rather susceptible to slugs and snails.
